Reviews about Hawker
- Col Bee Review added: 2018.01.23★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆I got a Pho.
Well at least they called it a Pho. It was definitely NOT a pho. It was basically very salty chicken soup.
Google any good pho recipe and it shows it's made mainly from BEEF stock, not chicken stock.
Also, pho should have at least 5 spices that you can definitely taste: cinnamon, cloves, star anise, cardoman. Their broth, you couldn't taste any of these. It should be aromatic and an intense flavour hit. This was just salty chicken stock.
Finally, pho is meant to be served with fresh coriander, mint and bean sprouts. Their version does not have this (it may have had a bit of coriander pre-mixed - which couldn't be tasted - but it seemed to have lots more spring onion, which is also wrong!).
I also got a "King prawn" Pho for nearly £10. There were 3 small prawns in there about the size of my thumb. A TOTAL JOKE.
If you want to know what real Vietnamese pho is, go to Thanh Binh in Camden. Unfortunately Thanh Binh was closed so I went to Hawker instead, which I will never do again.
I would love to know the chef that came up with this recipe. Take a classic, remove all the main elements of it, and make something horrible, overly salty and free of all the main flavours.
