  I engaged the help of Brygola Constructions to rectify some defects and finish a loft conversion when the previous contractor refused to finish and comply with building regulations.
  Mr Brygola seemed trustworthy and assured me that he would complete the conversion to a high standard and remedy all defects. His quote was expensive and I was expecting a decent service. Unfortunately doubts soon started to arise: to site was left messy and dirty to the point where it was so embarrassing that I had to clean it myself. A big skip was delivered and a van would arrive everyday to deposit rubbish from other jobs, while my rubbish was left lying around. Mr Brygola popped in regularly to collect payments but wasn’t concerned about the quality of the work carried out and he rarely inspected it. From his point of view if work had been badly done it was best to ignore it, rectifying defects was time consuming and he wanted to move on to new projects and money.
  His workers, who seemed fresh from Poland, had to purchase the tools they used, and one can understand that sometimes they may not have been able to afford the right tools for the job, however, this often results in a job badly done and can cause damage in addition.
  For example chasing for electric cables was done by repeatedly drilling holes under each other and not with a wall chaser machine. It was charged additionally at about £100 per metre. Similarly the standard wooden staircase was cut on site, to save money, and not made in the workshop with precision tools. It is rough and completely wrong but charged at over £3.900, which is well above the average going price. Many essential items were excluded from the quotation which meant having to pay extra for something that a different contractor would have included.
  Mr Brygola offers a 10 years guarantee on his work, but my understanding is that it needs to be insurance backed to be valid. Also Mr Brygola assured me that he does not subcontract any part of the works but now he says that he does not employ anyone and all the work is subcontracted.
  Very often a conversion or extension is the project of a lifetime and costs all one’s savings and considerable stress even when things go well. It is extremely regrettable when work is badly done and/or defective and the house is devalued as a consequence. I am left with a sagging roof and many other problems. Workers should be fully trained and qualified for the jobs they do particularly when it comes to plumbing and electrical work. It is essential that a customer checks the quotation carefully and does not trust the trader just because he seems thrust worthy and friendly. A proper contract that protects the customer is certainly a worthwhile step to take.
  This is my personal experience of course and entirely personal. Other people will have had different experiences, but bear in mind that when something sounds too good to be true it probably is. I have also learned that some websites only allow reviews posted by the traders themselves and not directly by customers.
